Lock Naming

If you are interested in or enjoy the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, its heritage or environment then why not become a member of the Society and know that you are supporting a charity that has the Canal at its heart.

The Society is a totally voluntary charity which was formed in 1997 to promote the Leeds & Liverpool Canal’s history, environment and ensure its heritage survives.

After many years of organising informative talks and walks along with improving aspects of the environment along the canal, the opportunity came to operate the heritage short boat Kennet which resulted in taking ownership in 2011. Following this the Society refurbished her to travel the Canal’s corridor with a cargo of displays and activities about the canal for the benefit of communities, organisations and schools.

Membership & Subscriptions

We aim to keep subscription fees as low as possible. There are different types of membership which are shown below.

Subscription fees cover the basic costs of organising events, administration and distributing the Society’s popular newsletter Clogs & Gansey.

In return for the membership fee:

  • You will be able to participate in the Society’s activities and events
  • You will receive the Society’s newsletter Clogs & Gansey, normally issued two or three times per year
  • You also have the opportunity to help with the crewing of Kennet

The subscription year is the same as the Society’s financial year and runs from 1st November to 31st October.

Existing members

Annual subscriptions are due on 1st November each year.

New members

If you are a new member joining the Society part way through the year, (from 1st November to 31st March), then your renewal subscription will be due on the next 1st November.

However, if you join the Society later in the year (from 1st April to 31st October), then your membership will be extended to include the following year. Therefore, your renewal subscription will be due on 1st November in the following year. (Effectively, up to seven months free)
