Following the First World War the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Company decided to close the Bradford Canal and stop providing a commercial transportation service. Benjamin Walls, who like his father was an employee of the Company, bought two boats from the Company to establish his own independent commercial transport company. One of these boats was the last to travel the Canal prior to its closure in 1922.
After a season in which Kennet opened to the Public on the east side of the Canal at Saltaire, Skipton, Salterforth and Burnley she headed into dry dock at Bank Hall, Burnley.
After Kennet’s 2023 season we are now looking to the future. In order to help bring in new ideas about how Kennet can be used along the length of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, we are holding a public open meeting about Kennet’s future: –
2023 was Kennet’s first full season for many years. It started with Kennet celebrating the 250th Aniversary of the first boats to carry goods on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal between Bingley and Skipton.
After observations by the crew of Kennet of some canoers paddling in a lock pond next to a bye-wash inlet Canal & River Trust have produced this film.

During Kennet’s journey from Bingley to Skipton last month, after being open in Shipley and Bingley a time lapse video was taken to give a “captains eye view”.
The talk on Sunday 29th May is about the Local History of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. It forms part of the build-up to the InMotion Keighley Transport Festival 2022 – 2nd & 3rd June. It looks at the development of the Canal as a critical mode of transport locally and regionally.

The Society’s attendance at the Saltaire Festival last September provided the first opportunity to open Kennet to the public for two years. It also gave us the opportunity to complete the filming of our ‘lockdown video’ A Voyage of Discovery.
